Bangladesh Interim Government Assures Safety of Hindus Amid Rising Concerns: Muhammad Yunus Dials PM Modi

Muhammad Yunus Dials PM Modi

In a significant diplomatic exchange between India and Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted, Muhammad Yunus, the head of Dhaka’s interim government, reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. Yunus assured Modi that the interim government would put first the safety and security of Hindus and other minority groups in Bangladesh.

This comes at a time when India is increasingly getting concerned over the violence against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly since August 5 when Hasina fled to India and violence swept the country. Prime Minister Modi has spoken about his concerns over the condition of Hindus and other minorities—in fact, he has done it openly twice—first on August 8 when he congratulated Yunus on taking up his new assignment, and the second time on August 15 during his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.

Thereafter, the Ministry of External Affairs released a statement which said that Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to continued support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. Modi said that the country has ensured the safety and rights of Hindus and all other minority communities.

The X official account of the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh corroborated that Modi extended congratulations to Yunus and invited him to join the Third Voice of Global South Summit virtually hosted by New Delhi on 17 August. Yunus agreed to participate from Dhaka.

Yunus, after listening to Modi’s views on protection of minorities, said his government is committed to the security of all citizens in Bangladesh, including the minorities. He alleged that incidents about attacks on minorities have been blown out of proportion and that he invites Indian journalists to visit Bangladesh and travel around the country to report for themselves.

Yunus further assured that the situation is stabilizing in Bangladesh and life is slowly returning to normal. Modi said he was ready to work very closely with the interim government, appreciating the leadership of Yunus with whom he shared the dias.

This came after Modi’s remark in his Independence Day speech, where he talked with grave concern about the situation in Bangladesh and hoped for normalization of things there, especially on the safety front of Hindus and other minorities.

On August 14, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain reiterated that this interim government is committed to strengthening ties between India and Bangladesh bilaterally and promised peace among all communities living in Bangladesh, be it minorities or other communities.

Earlier on August 12, Yunus had gone to the Dhakeshwari Temple and met with Hindu community leaders, promising justice and equal rights for all. Minority organisations have put the toll at a minimum of five dead and 205 attacks on Hindus in more than 50 districts since the Hasina government fell on August 5.
