Pune Woman Falls into 60-Foot Gorge
A 29-year-old woman, Nasreen Qureshi from Warje, Pune, fell into a 60-foot-deep gorge at Borane Ghat in Maharashtra on Saturday while attempting to take a selfie. The incident, which occurred during heavy rainfall, has brought attention to the heightened risks associated with visiting popular tourist spots during adverse weather conditions.
On the day of the accident, the region was experiencing intense rainfall, leading to the overflow of nearby waterfalls, including the famous Thoseghar Waterfalls. This significant weather event had already raised safety concerns at several popular locations.
Nasreen, who was exploring Borane Ghat with a group of friends, ventured dangerously close to the edge of the gorge to capture a selfie. Despite the hazardous conditions, she attempted to get the perfect shot, leading to her losing balance and falling into the gorge. The heavy rains had made the area slippery and treacherous, exacerbating the danger.
Immediate action was taken by local residents and the Home Guard, who coordinated a rescue operation to retrieve Nasreen from the gorge. The effort was challenging due to the rugged terrain and the adverse weather conditions, but the rescuers managed to reach her after several hours. Nasreen was then transported to a private hospital in Satara for urgent medical treatment.
Her condition remains critical as she receives care for her injuries. The accident has sparked widespread concern and discussions about safety, especially in light of the recent heavy rains and overflowing waterfalls in the area.
The heavy rainfall has increased the risk of accidents at tourist spots, leading the District Collector Jitendra Dudi to issue a directive for the temporary closure of such sites from August 2 to August 4. This measure aims to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of visitors during this dangerous period.
Despite the closure order, the natural allure of these scenic locations continues to attract visitors, some of whom are engaging in risky behavior for social media attention. A video capturing Nasreen’s fall has gone viral, raising awareness and prompting discussions about the perils associated with taking selfies in hazardous conditions.
