Vinesh Phogat’s Silver Medal Appeal Dismissed by CAS After Paris Olympics 2024 Disqualification

Silver Medal Appeal Dismissed by CAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) refused to hear Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification from the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024. An announcement made on Wednesday indicates that she had been disqualified just few hours before the final fight against USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt who eventually won gold.

Vinesh was disqualified after making it to the finals through some stunning victories, which included defeating Japan’s Yui Susaki. She however exceeded weight limit by 100 grams during the mandatory morning weigh-in. As a result, Phogat sought solace with CAS in an attempt to share a silver medal with Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba who replaced her in the grand finale following her rejection. But CAS rejected his plea leaving him and his followers feeling grief stricken.

IOS Support on Vinesh Phogat’s Silver Medal Appeal

The IOA has come out in support of Phogat and is currently seeking further legal remedies. IOA president PT Usha said she is not satisfied with the CAS verdict and added that the association will do everything possible to ensure justice for Phogat.

A day after she was disqualified, Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling. That brought an end to her storied career in the sport in which she had contested at three Olympic Games. Her decision has come in for immense support from the global sporting fraternity who continues to stand by the champion’s side through thick and thin, above 29 years of age.
